In Spring 2022, Ludic Liberation Lab will be dedicating its monthly sessions to playing three speculative world-building games: The Transition Year, Arcology World, and Solarpunk Futures. These games have similar visions and features, but different game dynamics that are important for us to experiment with: collaborative map drawing (The Transition Year), community role playing (arcology world), and utopian storytelling (solarpunk futures).
Ludic Liberation Lab is an experiment for making Theory Into Practice Through Play! Can we make a solarpunk post-capitalist future into practice by playing these games? We'll have to play to find out!
From the game's developers, Solarpunk Surf Club:
Solarpunk Futures is a storytelling game where players imagine the pathways to a desirable world from the perspective of a utopian future. Players use a deck of cards to remember Ancestors and work together using Tools and Values to overcome a set of real-world Challenges. Through dialogue and collaborative worldbuilding, collective and visionary narratives emerge of a new society, along with plausible scenarios for how to get there.
