Description:
During this one hour workshop we will consider the effects of our clothes on our psyche and develop personal criteria for making choices that please, protect, or support.

Warning: this workshop may lead to an uptick in awareness of what makes you happy.

The focus is on fabric and our senses with an emphasis on sense of touch. I don’t know about you, but with the recommended Covid-19 guidelines, I find myself more critical of the fabrics next to my skin, whether it be masks or gloves, or even the way hand sanitizer makes me feel. I am able to identify my tolerance for uncomfortable garments or fabrics because I am faced with wearing them out of necessity, day after day.

How do the things we wear make us feel? How do fabrics and the garments we wear relate to our values? Our commitments to society? Our commitments to ourselves? How do we care for ourselves and others? How do we use our awareness to find comfort in the uncomfortable? How do we find solace in the fabrics we come home to? How do we change things to make ourselves feel a certain way? How do we use material to care for the self?

Over the summer I’ve explored what it means to weave new aspects of teaching with my art practice. This workshop is a part of a series of final presentations for the Teaching as Art online class at the School for Poetic Computation, Summer 2020. https://sfpc.io/teachingasart-spring2020/

Attendance is free and you’re welcome to bring friends.

About the facilitator:
Hi I’m Teresa and I’m a costume designer, visual artist and educator. In my work, I celebrate performers, collaborators, and the audience. I examine societal and individual values, methods of self-expression, and the ways we use visual communication. Lately, this has led me to study wearable technology in performance settings.

I use my understanding of the complexity of people, of history, of fabric, and of assumption to build compelling visual images that challenge, enlighten, and entertain. I am excited to be able to highlight, emphasize, edit, and underline a story so that what we see honors word and movement, eliciting thought provoking reactions from the audience.

I’m excited to explore this awareness of touch together.
